Santa Cruz Mountains Bioregional Council (SCMBC) email list
The Santa Cruz Mountains Bioregional
Council is pleased to announce that a list of animal species at risk of extirpation
in the Santa Cruz Mountains is available online. SCMBC is a biodiversity planning
and conservation group for the Santa Cruz Mountains bioregion.
The list is not a compilation of state or federally listed species, but rather
looks strictly at our Santa Cruz Mountains Bioregion and species likely to be
extirpated here within the next 50 years. The list was prepared by local experts
for each taxonomic group and will be revised as additional scientific information
becomes available. We invite everyone to contribute any credible scientific information
about the listed species, or about unlisted species that may warrant addition
to the list. Surprisingly, information about the status of many species in the
Santa Cruz Mountains is either lacking or difficult to access.
We hope that the sensitive animal list will be used to provide greater consideration
for habitat protection of the listed species in any proposed land use changes;
recreation plans, management and conservation plans; stream ecosystem modifications
or emergency repairs; or new commercial or residential developments.
To this end our Board of Directors encourages the widespread use of this list
by land conservancies, park and open space districts, educational institutions,
municipal water districts, cities, counties, ABAG, AMBAG, state agencies, federal
agencies, as well as the local community of natural resource professionals, environmental
consultants, and concerned land owners.
