Joyce Stevens turns 80!

Joyce Stevens, long-time Ventana Chapter member, celebrated her 80th birthday in January with about 100 friends in Carmel. Joyce’s many interests and hobbies inspired the party decor, which included posters of her hero, John Muir; the River Rat trophy, (a broken paddle); other outdoor paraphernalia, and maps of a few favorite places. Surprising the party organizers, Joyce enhanced the ambiance by arriving with her own display of brochures of her current project, a proposed Monterey Pine Forest Park!

Guests recalled many great adventures with Joyce and heard emcee Art Haseltine list some of Joyce’s many accomplishments for Mother Nature. After Art summarized Representative Sam Farr’s statement about Joyce for the Congressional Record, Supervisor Dave Potter’s aide, Belinda Arbogast, presented a proclamation of Joyce’s local achievements for coast and pines. A past chapter chair, a leader in establishing our bookstore in Carmel, editor of several editions of our Trail Guide and map of the Ventana and Silver Peak Wilderness, Joyce continues to lead hikes and help with beach planting and much more.

Inspired by Joyce’s love of “Sing Things,” guests composed their own verses for the classic George Sterling “Abalone Song” from the old days of Carmel. Of the dozens submitted, here is a sample:

Oh, some like stout
and some like trout
Salami and baloney;
But I can only drink my beer
Washed down with Abalone.

Happy Birthday, Joyce!
