Ventana GLS Leaders Section

Interested in finding out what becoming a Ventana GLS leader entails? Need a leader application form or information on where to find a first aid class? Looking for the leader links? Here's where you'll find all the information related to becoming a Ventana GLS outings leader.

How to Become a Hike Leader
Ventana GLS would like to thank you for expressing an interest in becoming an outings leader. Becoming a leader is a relatively easy process, and our system of pairing you up with a current leader who will mentor you through the process helps to train you faster and more effectively. If you are looking for a leader to help mentor you, please contact the Ventana GLS Outings Chair. The four basic requirements to become a leader are outlined below. The information contained in the rest of this prospective leader handbook is designed to provide resources to help you through your application process and further prepare you as a leader. It is the interest of special people like you that keep the local chapters of the Sierra Club active and interesting.

The Four basic requirements for Ventana GLS Leaders:
1. Membership
You must be a member of National Sierra Club and a member of Ventana GLS.*

2. First Aid Training
All leaders must have current first aid training from an approved provider and carry a first aid kit appropriate for the outing or activity.**

3. Certification
With the guidance of an official Ventana GLS Leader-Mentor, prospective leaders must co-lead at least 2 hikes.**

4. Policy
All leaders must have a basic understanding of the Sierra Club policies and be able to follow them.

*Leaders from other GLS sections who would like to become Ventana GLS leaders must be Ventana GLS members and can do so by joining Ventana GLS and Sierra Club.

You will also need to fill out the appropriate paperwork (the leader application form) and provide documentation of 1st aid and their Sierra Club number etc. The only difference is that we will accept your earlier coleads, i.e. you would not have to redo those with a Ventana person in order to be approved.

If you are a leader from another section and merely want to colead with an established Ventana leader, or if you would like to crosslist an event, we do not need any additonal paperwork from you.

**Mountaineering and backpacking leaders need to have completed a wilderness first aid course and have co-lead at least 2 backpacking trips in the last two years.
