Saturday, October 4 National Solar Tour/National Energy Awareness Month ASES, the American Solar Energy Society (www.NationalSolarTour.org) and Solar Technologies (www.solartechnologies.com) are hosting the National Solar Tour on October 4, 2008. Additionally, this is National Energy Awareness Month 2008: Working To Secure A Clean Energy Future. The Santa Cruz Solar Home Tour comprises 5 homes on a self-guided tour. You'll be able to learn about solar power and what the homeowners have experienced with having solar power. In addition, Solar Technologies is having an Open House from 10 am - 3 pm. We'll be giving out energy saving information, raffle with solar prizes, refreshments, a solar electric car display. If you bring your PG&E bill, we'll do analysis to help you save energy and see if a solar power system is right for you. We can be contacted at 831-421-0440. Call our office for the map. Saturday, October 18 River & Road Clean Up Volunteers are needed to pull trash from the river and clean up the road. Trucks with winches appreciated. Clean-up bags, refreshments, provided. Saturday, October 25 A Celebration of the Life & Work of Robinson Jeffers The National Endowment for the Arts, in partnership with The Steinbeck Center, Tor House and University of California Santa Cruz, is sponsoring The Big Read: A Celebration of the Life and Work of the Central Coast Poet Robinson Jeffers" this Fall, 2008. Jeffers was an environmentalist, a poet who celebrated the wild California coast and the favorite poet of the Sierra Club's former Executive Director, David Brower. The culmination of this celebration comes on October 25 from 7 to 10 PM at the Veterans Memorial Building in Santa Cruz; admission is free. Renowned poets Adrienne Rich, Li Young Lee, Gary Young, and others will read from Jeffers' work and their own. Tim Fitzmaurice, Crown College Lecturer in Writing at UCSC will read on a Jeffers poem on behalf of the Sierra Club and will speak on Jeffers' relationship with the environmental movement. Thursday, October 30 Tree Forum Learn about the economic value of the Carmel urban forest. 2-4:30 p.m. Sunset CenterÕs Carpenter Hall, Carmel. Friday, November 14 Weed Symposium The 10th annual California Invasive Weed Symposium will present "Evolution/Revolution— What's New in the Invasive Weed World" at CSUMB.
