Chapter Chair's Column

June 2013

Welcome to the website for the Ventana Chapter! Founded in 1963 by photographer Ansel Adams, the Chapter has been protecting the natural world on the California Central Coast for 50 years. To read about the early days of the Sierra Club and Ansel Adams involvement, paste this link in your browser from the National Sierra Club website: http://www.sierraclub.org/history/origins/

We remain focused on the priorities set by our founding members to protect our coastline, wilderness, rivers, native plants and wildlife for generations to come. Today we are actively following guidelines set by the National Club’s Resilient Habitat Campaign to protect coastal areas threatened by climate change including fragile dune habitat along our beaches, wild lands proposed by development at Fort Ord, the Carmel River watershed, Monterey Pine Forest habitat and vast wilderness areas in the Los Padres National Forest.

A new issue of serious concern is the pressure from Big Oil companies to introduce hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” in South Monterey County. Go to our conservation page at: http://ventana.sierraclub.org/conservation/index.shtml to read more about this toxic method of oil extraction that is damaging human heath, valuable farmland and scarce water supplies throughout America on public and private lands.

To meet members and see some of the areas of our conservation work, we encourage you to join one of the nearly 200 hikes we lead every year in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties to some of the most beautiful places on earth.

Sincerely,
Joel Weinstein
